Who was Edith Rankin?

Edith Annetta Rankin 1900-1940

1806 – Anthony McGuin, Edith’s U.E.L. ancestor, purchased this property from the Reverend John Stuart.

1820 – Hugh Rankin Sr. moved to Collins Bay from Ireland, found employment at one of the McGuin mills and married into their family.

Late 1800’s – Dr. and Mrs. Whn H. Rankin, Edith’s parents, purchased 4111 Bath Road as a summer residence.

Early 1900’s – Edith and her family enjoyed many leisure hours in Collins Bay.

1940 -Tragically, just weeks before her marriage, Edith was killed in a train/car accident at Garden City. Long Island N, Y., the family’s winter home.

1959 – David J. Rankin, MPP, donated this beautiful site for our new church with the proviso that it be named Edith Rankin Memorial United Church to honour his cousin, show appreciation to her parents for their support given him, and to perpetuate the name of one of the oldest families in Collins Bay

In recent times we have called our Community of Faith “ERMUC,” but we never want to forget those who came before us.
