United Church Women

UCW Updated: May 16, 2022

Women’s groups have been meeting for a variety of reasons throughout the United Church
since its formation in 1925. In 1962, the UCW (United Church Women) was created as the
successor to the Woman’s Missionary Society (WMS) and the Woman’s Association (WA).

This year, 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the creation of the UCW.

The purpose of the UCW is, “to unite all women of the congregation for the total mission
of the church and provide a medium through which we may express our loyalty and
devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness, study, service, and fellowship.”
2022 marks the 60th Anniversary of the UCW in Canada.

The UCW at ERMUC is going to mark this remarkable benchmark by celebrating our 60th
Anniversary on Wednesday, June 22nd with a party in the Lower Hall that can spread out
onto the lawn. We are inviting all past and present UCW members to attend so we hope
many of you present here today or at home watching virtually, will plan on attending. At
that event we plan to honour the women in our congregation who are Charter members.
In addition to this celebration, we are intentionally transitioning our UCW groups to
Ministerial or Congregational Units that will look very much like the traditional UCW unit
but not be under the UCW umbrella. Please watch for information about these new groups.
Rev. Michelle will give a formal recognition of this transition at the worship service on
June 6th.
