1st Kingston West Cub Scouts : Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
INTRODUCTION TO SCOUTING
The Beavers’ motto is “Sharing, sharing, sharing” and activities revolve around developing social skills and care and concern for others (sometimes a tough task at that age!) For a Beaver group to run (ages five to seven), parents are needed to step forward as Leaders.
The Cub Scouting year begins from September through to June.
The Wolf Cub Pack is for ages eight to ten years and meets on Wednesdays nights at Edith Rankin from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Another Pack meets Thursdays at Our Lady of Lourdes School. Our motto is, “Do Your Best”.
Cub activities tend to promote initial development of outdoor skills and self-reliance. A typical outing would be a night hike through a nearby forested area, to identify some stars, look and listen for nocturnal animals, experience being out in the woods at night and how to survive if lost in such surroundings. A highly anticipated annual event is the Kub Kar Rally that is held in conjunction with other local Cub packs in the Area. The Cubs build and design their own cars out of blocks of wood and race them down twenty foot tracks. Cub evenings are usually spent working on various badges, (either as a group focusing on one in particular or individually); playing games; doing crafts; and participating in hikes, camping or field trips. Usually one or two major trips are planned, i.e. The Aviation Museum or the Science and Technology Museum, (both in Ottawa) are examples.
The Scout Motto is “Be Prepared”. The Troop is for ages 11-14 and meets Tuesdays at St. Andrews by the Lake Church. The youth in this section tend to do more outdoor activities than their younger counterparts. The highlight for the year is the World Brotherhood Jamboree that takes place in late September in Morrisburg one year and on Wellesley Island in the U.S. the next. The event attracts some 1,000 to 2,000 Scouts from all over Ontario, Quebec and the northern U.S.
Experience shows that youth members are drawn into Scouting by good adult leadership and sponsorship support. Where the latter fail, groups fail, but where adult leadership is strong, youth membership grows and young people gain some important life skills, personal values, friends and experiences from Scouting, that they may not obtain easily elsewhere. Adult volunteers in Scouting often surprised to find that they, too, get the same benefits! Our challenge for the fall is recruiting leaders for both of our Cub Packs. Our existing volunteers are either moving to other sections or ‘retiring’ and we are looking for a few enthusiastic adults to step forward!
Kingston West has seen interest in Scouting grow over the last few years, and, after an extended absence, we look forward to returning to Edith Rankin with our Cub Pack. We are certainly very grateful to the members of Edith Rankin Memorial United Church both for the support they’ve provided as leaders and for the use of Church facilities.
If you think you may be interested in helping Scouting in any capacity, either in youth leadership or “behind the scenes” work, please contact Dave Cunningham at 613-384-6297 or dave.cunningham@sympatico.ca .
