You summed up Valentine's Day perfectly, Wayne! No cards exchanged this year but I did receive chocolate. We continue to go the distance as my husband and I share 32 years together with many more to look forward to. Relationships are like teacups.

Merry Christmas to you as well!

I have discovered another good thing today after reading your excellent blog. I had decided to try to print it to share with a loved one who is in hospital. When I hit the print key, out came the last 8 blogs. Today, this inpatient will recieve a small booklet compliments of the Rev. Dr. Wayne Soble!

Good to hear your thoughts Nancy. We find, in gift giving, that there is so much stress - we need to spend this much money, we must be even between children or grandchildren, and what on earth do they need. In Rotary, our gift to our weekly speakers is a certificate noting that a donation made in their name to, this year, the food bank. Getting back to our grandchildren, maybe we should make a contribution in their name to some charity that they believe in. One year, one of our grandchildren bought a goat in the name of those to whom she was giving a gift - a goat in Africa for a minister. Maybe we need to think of giving at Christmastime in ways like this.

Agree, again! I believe that folks are caught up in "getting a good deal" often on items they don't need or for that matter want. When I was a kid, we all did with so much less. Yes, I am aware that makes me sound old. Today, when we purchase a radio, it needs to be able to play our Ipods, we need a CD player too of course 5 disks better than 1 (not sure you can still get 1) then we need a new stand for it, oh yes a case to transport CDs in our car, or the lap top carrier, the Ipad or blah, blah, blah. Some days this Grandma finds it all too much to absorb.

I also believe in a perfect world that more of us would direct our attention to charities, those in need, being aware of what we can all do to help others - even a friendly smile speaks volumes in a busy world. In 1996 my Mother passed away just prior to Christmas and for the very first time in my life, I understood that we can't all have a Merry Christmas all of the time. It seems to me that even a bit more patience as we go through the 'season' would be a very good thing!

Again your blog hits hard. It brought back my memories of being bullied: three times – once on my first day at YMCA Camp, 2nd a high school chum (I can’t believe I actually remember his name) and the 3rd my eldest cousin on his farm. The first was one event by 3 or 4 other boys. Re the others, both backed off right away when I one-upped them: the former at this same YMCA camp and the latter when I found my cousin cowering under his bed in a thunderstorm as I stood bravely by the window watching the lightning strikes. You and I were lucky that we outlasted (and outlived) the bullying; it’s one of my greatest fears for our vulnerable young people. How can it be stopped!!! Is it nature? We see it in the animal kingdom – the strongest wolf embarrasses and subjugates the weaker males of the pack. However, I don’t think we see it among females in the animal kingdom. I find it extra painful to see bullying in girls and women.

Your blog calls upon so many images and yet, as I read, more pop into my head. Like we're supposed to enjoy the journey, not just the destination. I try but sometimes, some of the journey kinda sucks, and usually those times are times of transition. Sometimes, I empathize with the rant of my kids at a younger age: "Are we there yet?" Maybe the destination is better than the journey! But then, what is the destination? Oh, oh, I might not like that either. So we turn to our friends and our God for help to get through the more difficult transitions. Paul

How creative: "Spiritual Spam". Sounds like an oxymoron to me. Nice how you've made such a negative concept (spam) into a meaningful spiritual practice of getting the "spam" out of our faith. This is a good concept to hang on to. Paul
